Who needs a good country movie?  Well, you know, the weekend's almost here.  Yeah, I know...theoretically it's only Tuesday, but that's what you get for me being such an optimist.

If you're looking for a good pick, either to add to your Netflix queue or to rent, may I suggest Crazy Heart.  Unlike my other movie selections, this one is fairly new.  It was released in 2009 and stars Jeff Bridges, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Colin Farrell, and Robert Duvall.

Crazy Heart was first a book from 1987 written by Thomas Cobb.  It centers around a seemingly washed-up country music singer by the name of Bad Blake. (played by Bridges)  Inspired by the life of Hank Thompson, and loosely modeled after the lives of  Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings, and Merle Haggard, the film offers a glimpse of an alcoholic singer struggling to come to grips with life and the aftermath after his 'glory days' have passed him by.

Jeff Bridges, who has a great way of elevating a character and at the same time "breaking him down," would earn his first ever Academy Award for Best Actor with his portrayal of Bad Blake.

Cowboy's verdict--I thought it was great!  You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll wonder why it took you so long to see this wonderful county-themed movie that contains strong performances throughout and a cool soundtrack.  (The song, The Weary Kind would also win an Oscar for best original song.)

Don't take my word for it.  Watch the trailer and get ready for a great weekend of movie watching.
