Casper's history is incredible, with signs of it all over the city.

The Nationa Historic Trails Interpretive Center shows how Casper played a significant role in the history of the Mormon, Oregon, California, and Pony Express Trails.

The Tate Geological Museum at Casper College takes you back to prehistoric history.

The name of the city even plays an interesting role in its history.

Named after Caspar Collins, the son of Lieutenant Colonel William O. Collins, the commander of a fort along the North Platte River, was killed while serving at the Fort in 1865. A short time later, the Fort was renamed Fort Caspar.

The city was established in 1888 and named after the Fort. However, because of a typo in the registration, the city is now known as Casper with an 'e' instead of Caspar with an 'a.'

Casper also has significant ties to World War II. The Casper Army Air Base is one of only four WW II installations constructed in Wyoming and was one of the locations where combat crews trained before heading overseas.

The Fort Caspar Museum is a great place to learn about the history of Fort Caspar, the city of Casper, Natrona County, and Central Wyoming's connection to WWII.

If you've never visited the Fort, you definitely should. If you're looking for an event to check out,  The Fort Caspar Museum Association is pleased to announce
their winter Lunch & Learn program.

Local historian Dob Wallace will present “World War II Revealed Through Historical Artifacts: Dog Tags” at Fort Caspar Museum from 12:00 to 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 25th.

A fried chicken buffet lunch will begin at noon, followed by the lecture at 1 pm. The lecture is included in the lunch price and is free with paid admission to the museum.

The cost for lunch is $10 for FMCA members and $15 for non-members.
