Listen, I'm all for helping a charity organization raise money to keep its operation afloat. Our Thankful Thursday program is a big part of that.
My problem is when people use platforms like GoFundMe to raise money for purposes other than charity.
I've seen many campaigns to raise money for families that have experienced tragedy, and I'm all for that.
I've seen campaigns to fund the construction of churches and other community-oriented buildings, and I'm all for that.
I've seen campaigns asking for help to fund a mission trip for kids who want to impact the world. I'm definitely all for that, too.
I've also seen campaigns to help raise money because someone's kid was about to turn 16 and wanted a car. Hold up; I don't support that.
I've also seen social media posts promoting GoFundMe campaigns to help people care for their pets, whether with medicines, vet visits, food, or other expenses. I understand people fall on hard times and need help, but pets are an elective part of life.
GoFundMe is supposed to be used as a tool to make it easier to raise money for worthy causes. Not to raise money so that a person doesn't have to work.

Undoubtedly, GoFundMe has done good in the world, but be sure you're careful. Like most things done online, people have found ways to exploit others. So, be selective with the campaigns you're supporting.
Those "help my family" campaigns may end up being a plea from a scammer to use your kind gesture to take advantage of you. A simple donation could put you in a financial situation that requires you to start a GoFundMe campaign.
