It's an age old battle around the Thanksgiving dinner table - Which tastes better / is better for you?  White Meat or Dark Meat?

White meat comes from the part of the turkey used for quick burst of activity (such as short burst of flight) and why breast meat is white.

Dark meat is the part of the bird that is used more frequently, such as legs, thighs because of all the walking they do.

But contrary to popular belief, dark meat is not all bad for you.  The dark meat on a bird contains vitamins A, K, B6, B12, niacin, folate, minerals like selenium, phosphorus and zinc.

Yes, dark meat has more fat and more calories and why it's my personal favorite as I also enjoy the juicy texture and I feel has more flavor.

The reality is that the protein and calories in white meat and dark meat are pretty similar in a turkey.  1 cup of roasted white meat from a turkey has 42 grams of protein and 220 calories, while 1 cup of roasted dark meat contains 40 grams of protein and 262 calories.

Its the extra saturated fat in the dark meat that gives it a bad name.  But either way, give me a drumstick and a thigh and turn on the game I'm a happy member of the Thanksgiving day tradition.
