UW Soccer Rallies for Road Win Behind Pair of Goals from Tatum

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., – The University of Wyoming soccer team accomplished something Thursday night at Colorado College that it has never done before. The Cowgirls completed their third come-from-behind Mountain West Conference victory, rallying for a 2-1 win at Stewart Stadium.

The program first vaults Wyoming to 4-5-5 overall and 3-2-2 (11 points) in league action. The loss drops the Tigers to 5-5-4 and 2-2-3 (nine points) in conference play.

“We are fit. We are competitive. We are strong. We are gritty, and that’s the team we want to be at this exact time in the season,” head coach Colleen Corbin said. “That’s the team we are, and it’s so fun to see them get to that point and truly embody that.”

Colorado College entered Thursday’s match unbeaten in their final four games, three of which were shutouts. That could have made a second-half deficit quite daunting.

Not for this Cowgirls’ squad. Not this season. And it was apropos that the comeback occurred off the foot of a captain, who carved her name into the program record books.

Senior Jamie Tatum scored not once but twice, marking the first time she’s done that since the regular-season finale of the 2021 fall season. Her two scores give her 19 for her career, which catapults her into the top five, into a tie for fourth all-time.

“Jamie played brilliantly tonight,” Corbin said. “She was very dominant in the midfield. She was super mobile and really dynamic. “We took her out in the first half, and I told her to just watch and pay attention to where the space was and where we could exploit them better. Her, Liv Stutzman, Eliza-Grace Smith and Nikayla Copenhaver, everybody went back in the second half and definitely dictated the tempo of the game.”

Tatum’s also at 52 points for her career while possessing five game-winning goals. That’s good enough for fourth and fifth in school history, respectively.

Tatum’s first goal Thursday came in the 66th minute. She fired in a shot from outside the box that bested Tigers’ goalkeeper Ally Wakeman.

“The first goal was ridiculous,” Corbin said. “That’s exactly what Jamie Tatum is capable of.”

Tatum’s second score in the 88th minute had to navigate around quite a bit more traffic. She dribbled it into the box and beat a couple Colorado College defenders before firing it past Wakeman.

Both of Tatum’s scores were assisted on by sophomore Eliza-Grace Smith.

The Tigers opened the scoring in the 29th minute. Shalom Prince netted a goal off a feed from Kaelin Enga that made the game 1-0.

Junior Alyssa Bedard led the Cowgirls with six shots off the bench. Tatum and freshman Alyssa Glover each logged five shots.

Senior goalkeeper Miyuki Schoyen didn’t record a save in the victory. Wakeman had eight saves.

Wyoming remains on the road, battling Air Force on Sunday. That match is slated for a 3 p.m. kick time at Cadet Soccer Stadium.
