How Wyoming Families Can Prepare For Wildfire Season At Home

If you've lived in Wyoming for a while, you're aware of the dangers of a Red Flag Warning. Even so, it's always a good idea to refresh your memory, especially with the summer we're having.

Hot, dry, and windy isn't a good combination for wildfires, so always keep the Ready, Set, Go Action Plan in mind.

Ready: Wildfires can happen in a split second, so just like a sports team, plan ahead and practice your plan.

Create a space around your house to defend it from fire.
- Clear overgrown vegetation that could be a fuel for a fire
- Keep your grass cut low, and if there aren't water restrictions, keep it watered
- Keep your roof and gutters free and clear of debris
Be prepared for an evacuation, practice your family's exit plan from your home, and have a designated meeting place your family is familiar with

Stay informed
- Stay updated on all weather and fire reports
- Follow all Emergency Departments for important information
Stay vigilant
- Don't do anything that could spark a fire
  - Avoid using lawnmowers on dry vegetation
  - Be mindful of burn bans
  - Extinguish fires properly and make sure they are out 100%
  - Report fires that are unattended
  - Don't throw cigarettes or other lit items out your window
  - Don't drive your hot vehicle through dry vegetation, or pull your vehicle off to the side of the road and park on dry vegetation
  - Secure trailer chains and don't allow them to drag on the road, which could cause sparks.
- Have your "go kit" ready.
  - All medications
  - First Aid supplies
  - Food and Water
  - Personal information and documents
  - Pet supplies
  - Electronics, chargers, and cables
