Gary Allan has lived a life worthy of the most stereotypical of country songs.  He started playing in honky tonks with his father by age 13.  He co-owned a construction business.  He's been married three times.  Two of those marriages would end in divorce, and his third wife would tragically take her own life.  Within the last year, he would also do battle in court to keep a stalker at bay.

His latest challenge--recovering from extensive throat surgery in November of last year.  He recently spoke with the Chicago Sun-Times about the ordeal:

"I was having a hard time singing those super-high notes and eventually lost all of my falsetto. Once the surgery was over, it was kind of a wild recovery that honestly drove me crazy. Shutting up was hell. I couldn’t talk there for a while, so I spent most of my time walking around with a dry erase board, which my teen daughters found quite comical."

Gary also spoke of how his tug-at-your-heartstrings lyrics tie him to his fans.

"I've been through my share of tragedies. More intimate venues give you the chance to see people and witness how the memories and music seem to wash over their faces with some of these songs. It's not unusual for me to be up there onstage and see someone crying their eyes out."

Despite the setbacks, Gary continues to tour and to record great music.  He's currently out on the "Get Off On The Pain" tour which is sort of ironic.  He's truly one of my favorites and I just hope that I get the chance to see him live someday.
