Sleep is on of the most important things that your body needs to remain healthy. Lack of sleep can cause problems with the health of folks in Wyoming.

It doesn't take long to start affecting you, either.

Being deprived of sleep has been linked to many different issues like:

  • heart and kidney disease
  • high blood pressure
  • diabetes
  • stroke
  • being overweight
  • depression.

None of these issues are pleasant, and if you can't beat insomnia, it can really start impacting other parts of your life too.

It's estimated that 1-in-5 adults has an issue with insomnia.

The definition of insomnia from the Mayo Clinic is

a common sleep disorder that can make it hard to fall asleep, hard to stay asleep, or cause you to wake up too early and not be able to get back to sleep.

I was always one that thought insomnia was just never being able to sleep. I didn't think it was as broad of an issue as it is.

I've always been able to function pretty good on 4-6 hours of sleep and not have any problems. The main problem I have is being able to fall asleep, but then waking up and not being able to go back to sleep.

If you're someone that deals with this same type of issue, I know how tough it can be. Especially if your work, family, relationships and daily life is being affected.

So how can you cure insomnia?

One way is to have a sleep study done and let the professionals help you figure it out. They'll be able to determine where your problem lies and help correct it.

There are other ways you can address the situation, here are ways you can work on insomnia starting today:

  • Keep your bedtime and wake up habits the same
  • Be Active
  • Check out any medications you are on to see if they can be causing the issue
  • Don't nap
  • Cut down on the booze, caffeine and nicotine
  • Don't eat meals right before bed
  • Avoid activities in bed, that shouldn't be done in bed. Phones, TV, Ipads, bill paying or work need to stay out. Make the room comfortable and a desirable place to sleep
  • Find a pre-bedtime routine that relaxes you and promotes sleep.
